Mental Health Situation in Hong Kong

Poor Mental Well-Being in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the prosperous cities in the world, but every one of us are experiencing a certain degree of mental distress and unhappiness in the heart.

Mental Health

Our research team has researched the situation in HK as below:

  • High school adolescents in 2008: prevalence rate is anxiety disorders (6.9%), oppositional defiant disorder (6.8%), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) (3.9%), conduct disorder (1.7%), depressive disorders (1.3%), and substance use disorders (1.1%) (Leung et al., 2008). 75% of all mental disorders develop before age 24 and have detrimental effects on patients’ life (Kessler et al., 2007)
  • Youth suicidal rate: 27% of secondary school students (total = 1685) had thoughts related to self-harm or suicide over the past 6 month in 2016 (Hong Kong Pediatric Foundation, 2017)
  • Adults in HK: Mental health disorders prevalence is 13.3% (Food and Health Bureau, 2018), with depression and anxiety being the most common disorders (Lam et al., 2015).
